Cannot update the dynamic configuration policy error vCenter Appliance

Published on February 15, 2013 by in General

Working in my lab today, I was having some issues with deploying virtual machines within vCloud Director. I remember a while ago that Chris Colotti had written an article about the importance of NTP with vCloud Director.  I thought I had better syncronize the vCNSM (formally vShield Manager), vCenter Appliance, and vCloud Director. Setting NTP on a vCD cell and vCNS Manager is a very simple task, but how do you do it on the vCenter Appliance?  There is no option through the configuration UI.  A quick google showed me this page within the vSphere 5.1 documentation center. Procedure Log into the vCenter Server Appliance as root. From a command line, enter the following commands to configure and start an NTP client. yast2 ntp-client add server=your_chosen_time_server yast2 ntp-client enable Enter the following command to request immediate synchronization with the time server. sntp -P no -r your_chosen_time_server However following this guide, I received the error: Error: Cannot update the dynamic configuration policy. Again I hit google, and found this bugzilla page by Novell. It states this issue is fixed, but doesnt show you how to fix the problem. So what do I do know? Well the vCenter Appliance is based on

Auto Deploy GUI fling

Published on March 7, 2012 by in General

Back in February Max Daneri released his Auto Deploy GUI fling.  This builds on the success of his PXE Manager fling released last year.  Lots of other blogs have already reported this fling, but I have been asked three times this week where they can download it from.  I will be writing a blog post soon on how to actually use this fling, much the same way I did with Max’s PXE Manager. Auto Deploy GUI is a front end interface to the Auto Deploy/Stateless infrastructure. Features The Auto Deploy GUI is a vSphere plug-in for the VMware vSphere Auto Deploy component. The GUI plug-in allows a user to easily manage the setup and deployment requirements in a stateless environment managed by Auto Deploy. Some of the features provided through the GUI include the ability to add/remove Depots, list/create/modify Image Profiles, list VIB details, create/modify rules to map hosts to Image Profiles, check compliance of hosts against these rules and re-mediate hosts. The GUI can be downloaded from labs.vmware.com/flings/autodeploygui There is a PDF document that explains how to configure and install the GUI plugin.  The document can be downloaded from download3.vmware.com/software/vmw-tools/autodeploygui/VMwareAutoDeployGUIPracticalGuide5.pdf

Looking up Managed Object Reference (MoRef) in vCenter Server

Published on November 25, 2011 by in General

I have been playing around today looking up the MoRef’s within vCenter to match up with the ones being shown within the vCloud Director logs.  The kb article below shows how to look up the MoRef’s in vCenter.  This is a really handy way of finding out which VM is referred to from another product. The easiest way to lookup the MoRef is to open your browser and point to: https://[FQDN_vCenter]/mob/ Extract from the KB article: This article provides information about looking up a Managed Object Reference (MoRef) in vCenter Server. This helps you determine which virtual machine, host, or datastore a product is referring to in its log bundle. For example, a virtual machine is denoted by vm-xxxx in the VMware Site Recovery Manager logs or the vpxa logs on an ESX host. vCenter Orchestrator Training EMEA – Sign up now

Published on November 10, 2011 by in General

Hopefully everyone got to see myself and Chris Colotti’s Brown bag session last night on ProfessionVMware.com.  During that session we spoke about the importance of Orchestration within a vCloud environment.  We received quite a bit of interest from people around resources available on the product.  VMware have just released 10 training classes in EMEA, so I thought I would publish the schedule here for anyone who is interested.  I actually completed this course two weeks ago, and was seriously impressed by the power of VCO and what it enables me to do within a vCloud environment.  If you have the time/resources available this is a must attend training session IMHO. To find the full schedule and in which countries it is available click here There is also further information available over at vcoteam.info
