vCloud Disaster Recovery White paper published

Alan Renouf and Aidan Dalgleish have written a white paper on how to automate the failover of your vCloud environment. This case study is a really interesting read, with some really cool concepts in it. Definite recommended reading for anyone looking to automate the disaster recovery of there vCloud infrastructure and provide business continuity. Click here to read the whitepaper VMware vCloud Director® enables enterprise organizations to build secure private clouds that dramatically increase datacenter efficiency and business agility. Coupled with VMware vSphere®, vCloud Director delivers cloud computing for existing datacenters by pooling vSphere virtual resources and delivering them to users as catalog-based services. It helps users build agile infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cloud environments that greatly accelerate the time to market for applications and the responsiveness of IT organizations. Resiliency is a key aspect of any infrastructure, it is even more important in IaaS solutions. This technical paper was developed to provide additional insight and information regarding the use of VMware vSphere PowerCLI™ to automate the recovery of a vCloud Director–based infrastructure. In particular, it focuses on automation of the recovery steps for vCloud Director 1.5–managed VMware vSphere vApp™ workloads. The recovery of management components can be achieved using VMware® vCenter™

My top 10 vCloud People to follow

So with all the new posts flying around on the top 10 people to follow for Virtualization, for Storage and Cloud amongst others, I thought I would write my own Top 10 vCloud people to follow. This is purely based on my opinion and I am not going to rank these, it is just people I follow everyday to help with my daily work. Kendrick Coleman – @kendrickcoleman - I’m Kenny Coleman (Kendrick is my full name), and live in Louisville, KY. I started my career off as a windows system engineer after graduating from the University of Kentucky, which lead me wanting to get back into networking and landed me my first certification, CCNA. As a Cisco and systems engineer, it lead me into my new passion of virtualization. I’ve been honored by VMware with the vExpert award for my contributions to the VMware community and being a virtualization evangelist. I’m a swiss army knife when it comes to IT and I’m not a one-trick pony. I believe that’s what has made me so successful this far into my career. I love diving into new technologies, trying to be a bourbon connoisseur, halloween, hanging out with my beautiful wife, and

How to deploy a vCloud Networking and Security edge device

Today I have been working in the lab messing around with vCloud Networking and Security for one of the projects I am working on. With all the new changes in vCloud Networking and Security version 5.1, deploying an edge device needs a little understanding. I have written this blog article to walk you through the steps involved in deploying an edge device, and what to look for when you have deployed it. The following steps show how to deploy a vCloud Networking and Security edge device through the vCloud Networking and Security Manager. Login to the vCloud Networking and Security Manager (formerly and still called vShield Manager) Expand Datacenters, and select the datacenter you want to deploy your edge device in, and select the tab Network Virtualization Select Edges.  You will be shown a list of the current edge devices.  Click the green plus to add a new edge device Type the name you want to call the edge device.  This is the virtual machine display name you will see in vCenter.  If you want to enable HA (High Availability) on the edge, tick the Enable HA device Enter the CLI username and password that you set when configuring the
